INTERNSHIP BREAKFAST

We have started planning for the 2008 BBI 'breakfast' which will most likely to be held in Week 12 or 13, to which the following people will be invited:

·                 2008 interns

·                 potential 2009 interns

·                 2008 employers

·                 potential 2009 employers

·                 "relevant" staff

Invitations will probably be emailed out in either Week 8 or Week 9.

INTERNSHIP EMPLOYERS

The 2008 Internship web site has many of this years employers listed together with a couple of more permanent job offerings.  I expect most of these employers will continue to offer internship positions next year.

Each year around 1/3 of interns find their own internship positions with employers new to the internship program.

COMMITMENT TO THE INTERNSHIP

Most employers and interns manage to achieve the following quite readily but some interns (and employers) have a less satisfactory experience because some or all of the following have not been able to be met in a timely manner.  Before you take on an internship just check that you will:

·         be performing “informatics” work

·         be able to work in a regular pattern (e.g. the same days / hours each week), and (preferably) be able to work more than one day a week

·         have access to systems and materials relevant to your work e.g. access to a computer, have a logon id and email account, be able to access materials on the server and / or intranet and, if appropriate, have internet access

·         have access to relevant areas in the building(s) e.g. have a security pass

·         have a manager with time to manage and mentor with time to mentor

·         be able to obtain assistance to develop a set of tasks, and develop a plan for you to carry them out, with at least some independence of the work of your manager.
